Curricular and Co-curricular Activities

Bridge Course

At the beginning of every academic year, students of Second and Third Year are provided with intense bridging lecture sessions on their respective specialization subjects. The initial 6 days and 2 weeks sessions are designed exclusively to bridge the knowledge gap related to the special subjects.

Mock Tests

Mock Tests are conducted twice in every academic year. These tests are conducted with the objective of preparing students for the Term-end as well as Annual Examination. Students get a chance to assess their level of understanding with the help of these tests so that they can better prepare themselves.

Assignments

With the objective of self-learning, notes making and self-reliance, the assignments are allotted to students. It also helps them to have concept clarity and be better prepared for continuous assessment.

Online Courses

In order to develop interest in independent learning and enhancing employability quotient, students are made aware about the plethora of online courses that are available on MOOC portals like SWAYAM-NPTEL, Coursera etc. The students can take up these courses according to their interst areas. The college has a Swayam Local chapter which is under the headship of a faculty member of the college, who is a Single Point of Contact (SPOC). The SPOC updates the students about all the latest NPTEL initiatives.

Workshops/ Activities/ Guest Lectures

Alongside regular teaching-learning practice, students are introduced to seminars, workshops, guest lectures etc. on the relevant topics which would acquaint them with practical experience. To name a few such activities, One day State Level Seminar on ‘Recent Developments in Indian Banking Sector’(2015-16), Two Days State Level Conference on Recent Trends in English Studies and Research (2016-17), One Day Career Guidance Workshop in Arts (2019-20) have been conducted.

Prof. in Economics, St. Mira’s College, Pune, Dr. Kalyani Kulkarni, Head of the Department of Economics, Fergusson College, Pune and Mr. Gautam Prakash, the then Asst. General Manager, College of Agricultural Banking, Pune were the resource persons for the seminar.

Dr. Ashok Thorat, Founder-Director, Institute of Advanced Studies in English, Pune, (Chief Guest) and Mr. Shirish Sahasrabuddhe, Director, English Language Teaching Institute of Symbiosis (ELTIS). Dr. Muktaja Mathkari, Principal, Abasaheb Garware College, Pune, Dr. Sonal Kulkarni Joshi, Professor, Deccan College, Pune and Dr. Ashok Joshi, (Retd.) Professor, HOD English, Goa University were the resource persons for the conference.

Under the Special Guidance Scheme of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Guest Lecture on ‘Phonetics and Phonology: Sounds of English’ by Ms. Jaiprabha John Gajbhiv, International Virtual Trainer, Lecture on ‘Understanding Concepts of Phonology and Morphology by Dr. Madhuri Gokhale from Fergusson College, Pune, Special Guidance on ‘Industrial Psychology: Today and Tomorrow’ by Mrs. Meeta Kanhere, H.R.Consultant, Pune. Dance and Movement Therapy Session by Ms. Avantika Malhautra (Psychologist and Expressive Art Therapist) and Ms. Aarohi Doshi (Psychologist and Dance and Movement Therapy Facilitator), ‘Short Stories: A Popular Genre in English Literature’ by Dr. Vaishali Naik, Vice Principal, Arts and HoD, English Department of Baburaoji Gholap College, Pune and One Day Workshop on Creative Writing by Dr. Supriya Sahasrabuddhe have been conducted for the students of Kaveri College and students from other colleges.

In addition, Guest Lecture on ‘Stress Management and Coping Mechanisms during Examinations’ by Ms. Sonal Bavdekar, Clinical Psychologist & Psychotherapist, lecture on ‘Indian Economy an Overview’ by Dr. Neelofar Raina, Associate Professor in Economics, Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce and a lecture on ‘Components of Balance Sheet’ of Commercial by Mrs. Bhakti Dandekar, Assistant Prof. in Commerce, Kaveri College have been conducted.

Kaveri Film Festival

The Kaveri Film Festival was started in 2015 with an initiative to make students understand and appreciate world cinema and thereby encourage learning of finer nuances of the creative process. The main objective of organizing the film festival is to use movies for learning. Since its beginning, films like A Beautiful Mind, Jobs, Cast Away, To Sir with Love, The King’s Speech, The Dead Poet’s Society, The Big Short, Trapped, Black Swan, The Miracle Worker and Gafla, ‘Samvidhaan – The Making of Indian Constitution’ to commemorate the 70th Constitution Day on 26 November 2019 have been screened.

Each film screening is followed by activities conducted by students viz. memory game, crossword puzzle game, quiz session, discussion on social, cultural and linguistic differences in American, British and Indian English.

World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day, the day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries. This day, each October, thousands of supporters come to celebrate this annual awareness program to bring attention to mental illness and its major effects on peoples’ life worldwide.

The Department of Psychology celebrates this day based on themes like ‘Inside Out: Mental Health and Wellness’, ‘Youth and Mental Health in the Changing World’, ‘Suicide Prevention’ etc. Many activities namely Stress Buster, Flash Cards, Happiest Memory Game, Mimic the Conductor, Submodality Shift Exercise, Express Yourself, Blindfold Challenge, Conflict Resolution Test: Mind/ Body Insecurities: Expression through Storytelling etc. have been conducted to spread awareness about mental illness and its major effects on peoples’ life worldwide and also to make people aware about the importance of sound mental health for a sound life.

Club Activities

Kaveri Kautilyas – The Economics Clubwas established in 2013-14 with the objective of gathering information, initiating discussion, expanding the knowledge horizon and spreading awareness among the participants about all vital economic and non-economic affairs taking place in India and abroad. The club aims to address the intellectual pursuits of the students and staff.

Many activities like PPT Presentations on topics like Land Acquisition Act, Corporate Re-structuring, Goods and Services Tax (GST), Greece Crisis, Bitcoin, , Make in India, Banking and Insurance Sector, Listing Agreement etc. have been made by the students. Under the Newsflash activity, many topics of importance like Brexit, Olympic Games and Demonetization, China Stock Market Crisis, Paris attack etc. have been discussed. Under the Vyakti Vishesh section, presentations and discussions on eminent personalities namely Swami Vivekanand, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Vishwanathan Anand, Narayan Murthy etc. have been undertaken. Under The Guru section, presentations and discussions on the life and lessons from the pioneers in the field of Economics namely, Kautilya, Adam Smith, Alfred Marshal, T.L. Malthus, etc. have been made.

Apart from these, in order to make students develop life skills, activities like quiz, taboo and impromptu talk, Dumb-Charades on economics terms, Mock Stock, Quick Bites, Crosswords, Riddles etc. are conducted. The club in association with the Department of Economics has conducted visits to Reserve Bank of India College of Agriculture Banking, Pune and Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune. As a part of the activity the members of the club went to watch a Bollywood Film ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’.

Kolors of Kaveri- The Arts Club of Kaveri College, was established in the year 2014-15 by the students with the facilitation of the faculty. This club has given a platform to the students to showcase their talents, in different art forms such as music, dance, painting, public-speaking, photography among others.

Various activities have been conducted under the club namely Crafts Workshop, Musical Afternoon, Vocabulary Quiz, Pictionary, Dumb-Charades, Origami workshop, Entertainment Quiz, short workshop on, Graphology, How to Conduct Yourself, etc. Apart from this, sharing of experience of a students’ visit to Anandwan, ashram was also arranged. In addition to this, short film screenings on films like ‘Ahalya’, Japanese animated movie ‘Princess Mononoke’, ‘Inner Workings’ and ‘Kriti’ have helped the students to appreciate the short film genre.

Departmental Visits

Visit to Schizophrenia Awareness Association, Dhayari, Pune
The Department of Psychology organises Field Visits to the Schizophrenia Awareness Association (SAA), Dhayari, Pune. Schizophrenia Awareness association (SAA), an institute located in Dhayrigaon, Pune works devotedly for mental ill patients especially for schizophrenic patients and their caregivers. The purpose of the visits is to enhance practical knowledge and develop a vision of Psychology and its application in everyday life. Students are made aware about the work undertaken by SAA for betterment of the Schizophrenic patients. This involves a variety of therapy sessions, developing various skills and interests, social skill training for effective communication, family therapy sessions etc. The visits provide students with real insight of the disorder and strategies to effectively deal with the problem. Interaction with the patients gave the students hands-on learning experience.

Visit to Practical Life Skills Farm, Baner, Pune

The Department of Psychology conducted visit to Practical Life Skills is a Government Licensed Neuropsychiatry Centre. They are a Team of Mental Health Professionals working towards finding the best treatment options for treating patients with Addiction, Depression, Schizophrenia, Bipolar, Anxiety, OCD etc. Practical Life Skills also works towards-Creating Awareness to move beyond the Taboo attached with Mental Illnesses and Addiction. The students had an orientation in the premises of the centre. They were briefed about the routine of the patients, the different therapies that are conducted in the organizations and also the training and internship programs that the organization offers.

Visit to English Language Teaching Institute of Symbiosis, Pune

The Department of English arranges visit to English Language Teaching Institute of Symbiosis (ELTIS), Pune with the objective of inspiring students to learn beyond classrooms and have exposure to the real world. English Language Teaching Institute of Symbiosis is one of the leading language teaching institutes in Pune. It imparts excellent training in English Language Skills and Communication Skills with the aid of the latest educational methods and techniques to foreign and Indian students.

Visit to Reserve Bank of India College of Agricultural Banking, Pune

The Department of Economics arranges visit to Reserve Bank of India College of Agricultural Banking, Pune. The visit includes interactive session on various related topics like the working of Reserve bank of India, Monetary Policy Working etc. the interactive session is followed by enriching visit to the Financial Literacy Centre and the RBI Archives, one of its kinds in India. The objective of the visit is to make students aware about the working of the monetary system in India, arouse interest in them to know the historical past and relevance of policies and working of the monetary authority i.e. Reserve Bank of India.
